Location and classification
Sonnenberg is a formally registered single vineyard (Einzellage) in the cadastral district of Ober-Ingelheim from Ingelheim am Rhein in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Bingen area and to the Großlage Kaiserpfalz. In the wine sites register, the site is listed under number 710321; a planted area is not specified there for 2024 because the site is in the sole ownership of one operating business.
Topography and soils
The altitude ranges from 87 to 137 metres above sea level, and the aspect is westerly. A documented Dautermann parcel lies in the historic town centre of Ober-Ingelheim, is fully sloped, and is oriented slightly west-south-west; it is at 87 to 95 metres in altitude. The soils are described as loess/pararendzina, as well as calcareous, deep, loamy and moisture-retentive. For the classified parcel, loamier sand and calcareous marl are also given.
Parcels and grape varieties
A documented Dautermann parcel enclosed by walls covers 0.25 hectares. About 50-year-old Spätburgunder vines are planted there. The VDP-defined sub-plot covers 0.20 hectares and is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE for Spätburgunder; this classification relates to the delineated VDP parcel and not necessarily to the entire registered site.
Wine and special features
The Dautermann-documented sub-plot, enclosed by houses and walls, is associated with its own microclimate and has been the family vineyard since 2013. A documented wine from the Ingelheim Sonnenberg is a Spätburgunder red wine from Rheinhessen.
