Location and Classification
The Sonnenberg is an officially registered single vineyard in the Mosel wine-growing region Mosel, area Burg Cochem and classified vineyard Goldbäumchen. It lies in the municipality Cochem, in the district of Sehl, and is listed in the vineyard register under number 440108. The producer refers to the Cochemer Sonnenberg as a monopole vineyard.
Site and Cultivation
The steep slope faces north-west and has a cool microclimate in which the grapes ripen slowly. The soil is described as blue slate. Cultivation—from vine pruning to harvest—is carried out entirely by hand. The vineyard register lists the planted area as “k.A.”; this entry denotes a vineyard in the sole ownership of a cultivator.
Grape Varieties and Wines
From the Cochemer Sonnenberg, Riesling, Spätburgunder and Schwarzriesling are documented. A documented single-vineyard wine is a Riesling Kabinett feinherb. Spätburgunder is also produced as Blanc de Noir.
Vinification
The Riesling Kabinett feinherb is fermented spontaneously in stainless-steel tanks, without the addition of selected yeast.
