Location and classification
Silberberg is an officially registered wine-growing area designation on the Mosel. The single-vineyard site, spanning across the municipality and parts of the town, extends over Beilstein and Ellenz-Poltersdorf; in the wine-growing area register it is listed under registration number 440316.
Area and topography
For Beilstein and Ellenz-Poltersdorf, the register shows, in each case, less than one hectare of planted vineyard area. The Beilsteiner Silberberg is associated with steep-slope viticulture and lies above Beilstein. Higher-lying former vineyard plots are partly abandoned or, today, are again covered with woodland.
Grape varieties and wines
Riesling is documented in wines bearing the designations Beilsteiner Silberberg and Ellenzer Silberberg. The wines described include Riesling Hochgewächs, Riesling Spätlese, as well as fine-dry and sweet versions. A Beilsteiner Riesling from Weingut Görgen is described as hand-picked and coming from steep-slope vineyard parcels.
Historical name
A local historical account links the name Silberberg to possible medieval silver ore mining at the site.
