Location and classification
Silberberg is a formally registered single vineyard in Bodenheim. It belongs to the Großlage of Sankt Alban and to the Nierstein area in Rheinhessen. In the vineyard register for the 2024 vintage, the site is listed as 19.5 hectares.
Soil and wine style
The soil consists of marl and pararendzina with calcareous loams and sands from tertiary marine deposits. The profile is shaped by deep, calcareous clay with a high proportion of source clay. The nutrient-rich, strongly calcareous soil shows limited permeability to water and air as well as difficult rooting conditions.
The regional vineyard profile combines these soils with full-bodied, dense wines, well-balanced acidity and persistent fruit intensity. White wines are described with mango, honeydew melon and apricot, while red wines are described with dark fruit and smoky spiciness.
Grape varieties and wines
Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer are grown in Silberberg. Also documented are Bodenheim Silberberg Riesling as a dry wine as well as as a fine off-dry Spätlese.
Cultivation
After land consolidation in Bodenheim, the vineyards were replanted by variety and prepared for modern mechanised cultivation. On Silberberg, five service trees and several cherry trees are still in place.
