Location and classification
Schützenlay is an official single vineyard site in Ediger-Eller, in the Eller cadastral area. It belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel, to the Burg Cochem area and to the Großlage Grafschaft Großlage.
Register entries
The official wine-growing sites register lists Schützenlay under number 440227. For the planted area, k.A. is noted in the register; this designation there stands for the sole ownership of a wine-growing business.
Topography and vines
Schützenlay is described as a steep site and as one of the steeply sloping sites of the Mosel. The subsoil consists of slate and weathered slate. For a parcel, predominantly old vines planted in 1944 with deep roots are documented in weathered slate. A 2024 Riesling from the Ellerer Schützenlay was harvested entirely by hand.
Wine and history
For the Ellerer Schützenlay produced by Weingut Günter Conzen, Riesling is documented. The 2024 vintage was marketed as Riesling Hochgewächs, fine off-dry, with 12.37 % vol. alcohol, 21.4 g/l residual sugar and 7.0 g/l acidity. The historical wine-growing sites register uses the name Orent for the site; the current name is explained by an old shooting lodge in the valley of the Lay.
