Schneckenberg

Location and classification

Schneckenberg is a legally registered single-vineyard site in the German city district of Heppenheim in Worms. It belongs to the large site of Liebfrauenmorgen and to the Wonnegau area in Rheinhessen, in the south of the growing region near the border with the Palatinate.

Soils

The site comprises loess over pararendzina as well as gravel, sand and loam over rigosol. Loess, deposited during the Ice Age as a calcareous dust, forms deep, calcareous, nutrient-rich and water-retentive soils. Gravel, sand and loam originate from Ice Age river deposits; these soils are stony, well-drained and, in dry years, affected more strongly by drought stress.

Wine style

The loess-pararendzina share is associated with yellow-fruit aromas as well as notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus, moderate structure and gentle acidity. The rigosol soils stand for herb-spiced aromas, solid structure and freshness, as well as for a style more oriented towards red wine, with ageing potential.

Area and history

The 2024 wine-growing sites register lists Schneckenberg as having 169.5 hectares of planted vineyard area. The name is already attested in a document from 1414. In the Rhineland-Palatinate wine-growing sites register, the site carries the wine-growing site identification number 730521 and is assigned to the municipality of Worms as well as to the cadastral district of Heppenheim.
