Location and Classification
Schmitts-Kapellchen is a registered single vineyard site in the Nackenheimer cadastral district. It belongs to the Nierstein area and the Großlage Gutes Domtal in Rheinhessen. The 2024 vineyard register lists it under number 720415 with 104.9 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Relief and Soil
The vineyard lies at an altitude of about 95 to 120 metres and has exposures from east to south-west. The soil is described as loess-pararendzina. The deep, light loam with clayey silty loam is calcareous, well-aerated and rich in nutrients. It allows good root penetration and has a high water storage capacity for water available to plants.
Vines and Wine Style
Documented varieties in the site include, among others, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Silvaner, as well as Spätburgunder, Dornfelder and Merlot. The loess-influenced location is associated with fruit-forward wines, fresh acidity, medium structure and an early-to-access style. The soil has a medium warming capacity and a high growth potential.
Name and Cultivation
The name goes back to a wayside shrine that is said to have been donated by the Schmitt family or by Schmittburg. On documented parcels of the Binz winery, excess bunches are thinned out on high-yielding vines; in selected vineyards, leaf removal in the grape zone is also carried out.
