Location and Geography
Schlosswengert is a single-estate location of Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein on Hohenbeilstein in Beilstein in the wine-growing region of Württemberg. The contiguous vineyard area covers about six hectares and surrounds the castle hill. The vineyards facing south, south-west and south-east lie at elevations of 270 to 340 metres and have slope gradients of 10 to 57 percent. Parts of the site are terraced.
Climate and Soil
The exposed location regularly receives wind, which cools and dries the vines even in hot weather. The soil releases heat at night that it has stored during the day. The documented geology consists of gypsum Keuper and coloured marl.
Cultivation and Grape Varieties
Schlosswengert is farmed by Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein. The winery is certified for ecological production according to EU guidelines and Naturland; its vineyards have been fully converted to certified organic viticulture since 1994. The steep terrain requires extensive work by hand. Riesling, Spätburgunder, Lemberger and Weißer Burgunder grow in the site.
Classification and Wines
The VDP classifies Schlosswengert as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in the wine-growing region of Württemberg. Dry wines from the single-estate location are listed as VDP.GROSSE GEWÄCHSE® with a gold capsule. Documented are dry Riesling, dry Weißburgunder, dry Lemberger and dry Spätburgunder. The Schlosswengert-Lemberger matures for 23 months in barriques.
