Site and History
The Wachenheimer Schloßberg is a vineyard site in Wachenheim in the Pfalz. It lies immediately next to the ruins of the Wachenheim castle and is described as a vineyard of historical importance.
Topography and Soil
The terraced site, facing south-east, is located at around 200 to 250 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of 35 per cent. The documented soil consists of Bunter sandstone, a red sandstone formation. The site benefits from early morning sun and cool nights and is at a higher elevation than is typical for vineyards in the Pfalz.
Cultivation and Classification
The area classified by the VDP covers 2.62 hectares. The Wachenheimer Schloßberg is listed as a VDP.ERSTE LAGE® in the Pfalz; the classified variety is Riesling. Documented measures include reduced yields, selective hand-harvesting and farming oriented towards nature. The terrace plots are worked exclusively by hand, including the maintenance of historic dry stone walls.
Wines and Maturation
Riesling wines, including dry Riesling bottlings, are produced from the Wachenheimer Schloßberg. A documented maturation practice includes temperature-controlled vinification and longer ageing on the lees in wooden barrels.
