Location and Topography
The Schloßberg vineyard lies north of Achkarren, a district of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl in the wine-growing region Baden. The slopes are at about 200 to 310 metres above sea level and are inclined by 20 to 60 percent. Their aspect ranges from south-west to south-east.
Soil and Climate
The Schloßberg is characterised by steep sites and a basin-like surrounding area that enhances solar warmth. The stony volcanic soils store the sun’s heat that has been absorbed. The VDP classifies the rock as vulcanite.
Grape Varieties and Classification
As classified grape varieties, Riesling, White Burgundy, Grey Burgundy, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are listed. The wines are made from white and red Burgundies as well as Riesling. Schloßberg, Achkarren is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE with a classified area of 111 hectares.
Historical Connection
Linked to the vineyard are the remains of Höhingen Castle, a fortress built in the 13th century. In 1819, rock was blasted below the ruins to make space for the cultivation of vines.
