Site and landscape
The Schloßberg is a designated wine-growing site in Schriesheim in the winegrowing region Baden and in the Badische Bergstraße area. The vineyards are located on the slopes around the Ölberg. The Strahlenburg stands on a spur of the Ölberg, which is also known as the Schriesheim Schlossberg.
Soil and climate
A deposit of quartz porphyry has been documented in the Ölberg area. The vineyard landscape also includes granite and porphyry. In the evenings, warming sunlight from the Rhine plain to the west reaches the Schriesheim vineyards, while from the east cool air from the Odenwald has an effect.
Grape varieties and wine
The Schriesheim cooperative cultivates, in the wine-growing sites connected with the Schlossberg, among others Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Silvaner, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Spätburgunder, Saint Laurent and Dornfelder. A Schlossberg wine from the 2023 vintage is a dry Riesling made from 100 percent Riesling with 13 percent alcohol, 6.8 grams of acidity and 5.9 grams of residual sugar per litre.
Historical designation
Schloßberg is historically also called Kellersberg and is one of the preserved wine-growing site names on the Ölberg. A description from 1842 lists it among the better sites in the surrounding area.
