Location and Classification
The single vineyard Schloßberg is located in the cadastral district of Oppenheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Krötenbrunnen. The official directory of wine-growing sites lists it under the wine-growing site number 720524. The vineyard area covers about 6 hectares.
Topography and Soil
Schloßberg lies at around 150 to 160 metres above sea level and faces east. The soil is classified as a calcareous rendzina formed from tertiary marine deposits of a calcareous algae reef. It is shallow to medium-depth, very high in lime, stony and sandy loam. The useful water-holding capacity is low, while aeration and heat retention are good; root growth is restricted.
Wine Character
The published site profile describes the wines as aromatic and lively, starting out with notes of citrus fruits, apple and gooseberry, later with mango and passion fruit. A balanced acidity as well as mineral and chalky qualities shape the character. The wines are also described as expressive, multi-faceted and deep; when young they are rather closed, with clear potential for development.
Name and History
The name Schloßberg is derived from the ruins of Landskron above Oppenheim. In regional historical documentation, the site is counted among the Oppenheim vineyards that, during the renewed upswing of viticulture and wine trade from the middle of the 19th century onwards, became known beyond the town.
