Schloßberg

Location and Classification

Schloßberg is a single-vineyard site in Battenberg (Pfalz) in the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area, and within the Großlage Höllenpfad. The site is listed as a legally defined designation for the vineyard of Battenberg (Pfalz) in the winegrowing region Pfalz.

Area and Aspect

The officially listed planted vineyard area, as of 15 October 2024, was 17.1 hectares. A documented plot of the Battenberger Schloßberg lies on the eastern slope of the hill and faces east. Adjacent woodland provides cooler air there; the partial shading by the warmer afternoon sun delays ripening.

Grape Varieties

For wines labelled Battenberger Schloßberg, Riesling and Spätburgunder are documented. In addition, from an east-facing plot comes Portugieser from vines over 60 years old, which is cultivated and harvested exclusively by hand.

Portugieser from the Site

A dry Battenberger Schloßberg Portugieser is described as fine-grained and elegant, with dark berry fruit, herb-spiced and lightly roasted notes, tannin, and supporting acidity. For this wine, a long maceration time and a maturation period of more than 20 months in French barriques are documented.
