Battenberg (Pfalz)

Location and landscape

Battenberg (Pfalz) is a local municipality in the Bad Dürkheim district and belongs to the Leiningerland collective municipality in Rhineland-Palatinate. The settlement lies on the Haard edge at an altitude of about 300 metres, roughly 20 kilometres west of Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Battenberg is situated on the north-eastern edge of the Leininger spur, a distinctive outcrop of the Palatinate Forest offering views over the northern Upper Rhine plain. The Leininger spur consists of Buntsandstein and forms the geological transition between the heights of the Palatinate Forest and the Upper Rhine plain.

Viticulture on the Schloßberg

Battenberg belongs to the wine-growing region Pfalz. The registered wine-growing site Schloßberg is assigned to the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area and the larger site Höllenpfad. The official directory of wine-growing sites for 2024 lists 17.1 hectares of planted vineyard area for the Battenberg district.

Grape varieties and ageing

For the Battenberg Schloßberg, Riesling, Portugieser and Spätburgunder have been documented. A dry Riesling from 2024 has 12.5 percent alcohol, 0.8 grams per litre residual sugar and 7.8 grams per litre acidity. For a parcel, more than 60-year-old vines as well as exclusively manual care and harvesting are documented. A vintage wine made from Portugieser from 2018 underwent a long maceration on the skins and was aged for more than 20 months in French barriques.

History

Battenberg is recorded in the Lorscher Codex for the year 788 under the name Bettenberge. Archaeological finds indicate traces of settlement from the Stone Age, the Hallstatt period, the Roman and Merovingian periods, as well as the Middle Ages. The Battenberg castle was probably built around 1240 for Count Friedrich III of Leiningen and was first mentioned in connection with the Counts of Leiningen in 1359. French troops heavily damaged the castle in 1689 during the Palatinate War of Succession; parts of the masonry were later removed or used as a quarry in 1785.
