Location and Landscape
The single-vineyard Schloß is located in the Herrnsheim district of Worms in the Wonnegau region and forms part of the Liebfrauenmorgen grand cru. It borders the park of Schloss Herrnsheim and runs parallel to the Rhine in the direction of Osthofen. The St.-Anna Chapel also belongs to the site.
Soils
The loess-pararendzina soils are deep, calcareous and fertile loams with argillaceous silty components, good water retention and good root penetration. In addition, there are sand regosol soils made of deep, gravelly loamy sand that were formed from coastal sands, gravels and rock fragments. They are well aerated, but provide only limited rooting depth and can encourage drought stress in dry years.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
For the site, Riesling, Weißburgunder, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc are documented. The parcels on loess-pararendzina are associated with yellow-fruit aromas as well as notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus. The wines are slender and refreshing, with mild acidity, a medium body and early drink maturity. From the sand regosol parcels, lively, fruity, slender and elegant wines are described with distinctive acidity and aromas of green apple, citrus and grapefruit.
Historical Reference and Cultivation
The site is connected with Schloss Herrnsheim, whose grounds housed a moated castle around 1460. The history of the château is linked to the Dalberg family. The Volker Schmitt winery cultivates its holdings in the Herrnsheimer Schloss without herbicides, using horse manure, biological plant protection products and sown cover-crop mixtures.
