Location and Topography
The Schloß Saarfelser Schloßberg is located in Serrig in the Saar area of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer winegrowing region in Germany. The site, which faces south to south-east, lies at about 150 metres above sea level and has a slope of 30 to 60 percent.
Soil and Classification
The vineyard is planted on grey slate and covers, as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, 4.20 hectares. In the official register of vineyard sites, it is listed as a single vineyard, Schloß Saarfelser Schloßberg, in the municipality and cadastral district of Serrig. Riesling is the classified grape variety.
Cultivation and History
The site is farmed by the Stiftungsgut Vereinigte Hospitien and documented by the winery as a monopoly site. The vineyard around Schloss Saarfels was planted between 1912 and 1914. Adolf Wagner had 75,000 vines set on the twelve hectares acquired in 1911; after the sale of the castle, the vineyard remained in the sole possession of the Vereinigte Hospitien.
Wines
From the site, Riesling Kabinett, finely sweet to full-bodied and dry Riesling, dry VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS, as well as Auslese are documented. The Rieslings are described as full-bodied, with exotic fruit notes. The Kabinett shows apple and citrus fruit with lively acidity, while the dry Great Growth (Großes Gewächs) combines a spiciness shaped by the Saar slate with candied citrus and apple notes. A documented dry Riesling is fermented down to about 2.0 g/l residual sugar.
