Schloß Rheinburg

Location and Terroir

Schloß Rheinburg is a vineyard site in Gailingen am Hochrhein on the slope above the northern bank of the Rhine and around Schloß Rheinburg. The south-facing site includes steep sections with inclines of up to about 50 percent. Flat, barren, gravelly-sandy soils warm up quickly.

Climate and Cultivation

The operators describe the site as a pre-alpine maritime microclimate; Gailingen is characterised by the municipality as having a mild climate. Since 2020, Lorenz Keller and Julian Moser have been cultivating the vineyards sustainably, including on the steep slopes. The Rauschenberg and Hammer sites naturally deliver low yields due to their flat, extremely barren soils.

Grape Varieties and Wines

At the site, Sauvignon, Ruländer, or respectively Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Dakapo, Auxerrois, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder have been planted. The current single-site wines from Rauschenberg, Steig and Hammer are vinified purely from Spätburgunder, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Auxerrois and Sauvignon Blanc. The Cuvée Franz Arthur is made from Sauvignon Blanc, Weißburgunder and Chardonnay.

History

The Villa Schloss Rheinburg was built in 1866 by Franz Arthur Rausch; even at that time, extensive vineyards existed around the estate. After the vineyard areas declined and were partly converted into meadows and sheep pastures, their restoration began in 1981. The historic Trotte, earlier called the Trotte in the Steig, was built in 1607 on the vineyard slope north of the Rhine.
