Location and classification
Schloß is a legally registered single vineyard site in Grünstadt. The vineyard plots are located in the cadastral districts of Asselheim and Grünstadt. The site belongs to the Großlage Höllenpfad in the Mittelhaardt–Deutsche Weinstraße area of the winegrowing region Pfalz.
Area and designation
On 15 October 2024, 6.3 hectares were planted in Asselheim and 3.1 hectares in Grünstadt, for a total of 9.4 hectares. In the official vineyard site directory, the designation “Schloß” is entered under vineyard number 820409 for both cadastral districts.
Soil and climate
For the Asselheim Schloß, a soil made of loam and clay with a slight limestone component is described. Owing to the westerly air flow from the Eistal, the vineyards including the Schloß have a cooler microclimate and a slower grape-ripening process.
Wines and name transmission
Under the designation Asselheimer Schloß, wines made from Merlot, Morio-Muskat, Auxerrois, Grauburgunder, Huxelrebe and Gewürztraminer are documented. These include dry Merlot as a red wine and semi-sweet Morio-Muskat as a white wine. A documented Merlot was aged in wooden casks, while an Auxerrois was aged in a stainless-steel tank. The name is explained by the tradition that a castle may once have stood at this location.
