Schloß

Two vineyards named Schloß

The name Schloß refers to two separate vineyards in Rheinhessen: Dienheimer Schloß in Dienheim and Oppenheimer Schloß in Oppenheim. The two sites are not to be equated.

Dienheimer Schloß

Dienheimer Schloß is a single vineyard in the Nierstein area, within the Großlage Krötenbrunnen. It lies at around 160 to 210 metres in altitude and is oriented to the east to south-east. The soil consists of loess over pararendzina, as well as lime-rich, deep, light loam with clayey silt and good water storage that is available to plants.

The description of the terroir links the site with yellow-fruited aromas such as apple, peach, pear and citrus, as well as slender, refreshing wines with mild acidity and a medium body. In the parcels there Huxelrebe, Bacchus, Rivaner and Scheurebe have been documented. The name refers to a château near Dexheim, from which, after a fire in 1683, part of the tower remained.

Oppenheimer Schloß

Oppenheimer Schloß is an independent vineyard in Oppenheim. For a Chardonnay parcel, a soil is described that is shaped by limestone quarry spoil, which was deposited in the field in the 1970s and 1980s. The resulting lime-rich, wind-protected site is farmed with Chardonnay.
