Location and classification
Schießlay is an officially registered single vineyard site in Thörnich in the wine-growing region Mosel and in the district of Bernkastel. The name of the larger classified growing area is Sankt Michael. The registered vineyard area covers 114.9 hectares.
Relief and soils
The wine-growing site is described as a comparatively gently rising slope along a track and thus stands out from the steep slopes of the Mosel valley. Its soils consist of gravel deposits from an earlier course of the Mosel, locally with sandy soils and a clay-rich subsoil. The alluvial sediments were formed through river deposits in the floodplain opposite the steep slopes.
Grape varieties
Traditionally, Schießlay is planted predominantly with Rivaner and grape varieties from the Pinot family. The share of Riesling has increased; in addition, Burgundian varieties and fungus-resistant grape varieties are grown in parts of the site. The deep, more fertile and moisture-retaining soils are also suitable for grape varieties with a higher water requirement.
Wine style
The soils can store water and absorb heat. Wines from Schießlay are described, compared with wines from slate slopes, as less mineral in character, with fruity, spicy and full-bodied qualities, as well as frequent aromas of yellow fruit. Riesling from the sandy soils is described as particularly fruit-forward.
