Location and Topography
The Scheidterberg is a vineyard site in Ayl in the wine-growing region Mosel. It lies as an east-facing slope behind the village. The middle section is described as a warmer, south-facing area. For the origin shared by Scheidterberg and Rauberg, a southeast aspect and a slope gradient of 30 percent are given.
Classification and Soils
The VDP lists the Ayler Scheidterberg with 3.00 hectares of classified vineyard area and the grape variety Riesling. The site is classified as VDP.ERSTE LAGE. For wines from Scheidterberg and the adjacent Rauberg, slate is documented as the soil type.
Historical Evidence
The earliest known named mention in connection with today’s Ayler Scheidterberg dates from 1501 and describes the sale of a vineyard. Historical estimates assign around 7 hectares of the vineyard area recorded in 1632 to the area of today’s Scheidterberg. Maps by Tranchot and Müffling from the period between 1803 and 1820 already show the site planted with vines.
Documented Winemaking
For a Peter-Lauer Riesling from Scheidterberg and Rauberg, whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, and a three-month maturation on the lees are documented.
