Schatzgarten

Location and classification

Schatzgarten is an officially recorded single vineyard in the Wolf district of Traben-Trarbach in the Mosel wine-growing region Mosel. It belongs to the Bernkastel area and to the Großlage Schwarzlay. The 2024 vineyard register lists an area of 19.6 hectares.

Topography and viticulture

The Wolfer Schatzgarten lies at the foot of the former Wolfer monastery and with a view of the Mosel. For a documented experimental plot, an east-facing orientation and a maximum slope gradient of 35 per cent are given. The vines were planted at a spacing of 2.0 by 1.3 metres, corresponding to approximately 3,846 vines per hectare.

Grape varieties and wine styles

In the Wolfer Schatzgarten, Rivaner and Kerner are documented at Haus Schatzgarten. A plot planted there in 1975 is planted with Müller-Thurgau. Alongside the documented vineyard holdings of a local winery, which also include the Wolfer Schatzgarten, these further include Riesling, Rivaner, Merlot, Spätburgunder and Dornfelder.

A Riesling from the 2024 vintage from the Wolfer Schatzgarten is listed as quality wine, feinherb, with 12.5 per cent alcohol, 17.8 grams of residual sugar per litre and 7.3 grams of acid per litre. Rivaner from the site is described as quality wine in a mild style.

Documented cultivation

The experimental plot was planted with Regent on a 5-C trellis; at the time of the trial the vines were eleven years old and were harvested on 18 October. From May to August, leaf magnesium treatments using a back sprayer were carried out in several stages of growth. Haus Schatzgarten states that it presses the grapes from its own vineyards itself and matures them in its own cellar.
