Location and Classification
Saumagen is a vineyard site at the western edge of Kallstadt in the Pfalz, at the foot of the Haardt. The site covers a total area of about 37 hectares, of which 33.00 hectares are classified as a VDP site area. Saumagen is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
Topography and Climate
The south-easterly facing site lies at an elevation of 160 to 200 metres and has slope gradients of 5 to 20 per cent. Around 20 per cent are considered steep, 75 per cent sloping and 5 per cent flat. For Kallstadt, a mean annual temperature of 10.8 °C, 648 millimetres of annual precipitation and 2,126 hours of sunshine were recorded for the period 2008 to 2013.
Soils and Vines
The soils consist mainly of loess loam as well as calcareous marl with small limestone stones. Terra rossa from Tertiary limestone and Parabraunerde-Rigosol from Quaternary sand silt are also documented. The loess-influenced soils cover around 30.5 hectares. The vines take root very deeply in the deep, permeable soils. The grape varieties are classified as Riesling and Spätburgunder.
History and Wine Style
The name Kallstadter Saumagen has been documented since 1810, or respectively 1836. The site includes the Gewanne Horn, Kirchenstück and Nill. With Saumagen, dry Rieslings, including Spätlesen and Auslesen, as well as Spätburgunder with the designation GG are associated.
