Location and classification
The Rote Berg is a vineyard site in Kenzingen in the wine-growing region Baden and in the Breisgau area. The single-vineyard site belongs to the Großlage Burg Lichteneck and is used as “Roter Berg Kenzingen” together with the municipality name.
Soil and climate
The site is characterised by red, iron-rich soil. In the upper layer, shell limestone and red calcareous sandstone are described; beneath that, calcareous marl with a high proportion of clay. In the vicinity of the Rote Berg, iron ore was mined in earlier times. Gentle thermals and restrained winds from the Rhine plain characterise the described climatic conditions.
Grape varieties and wines
For the Rote Berg Kenzingen, wines made from Spätburgunder, Chardonnay and Merlot are documented. A described Spätburgunder and a Chardonnay are dry quality wines from Baden. The wines from the site are described as structured, piquant and fresh.
Historical significance
Following the legal consolidation of local vineyard names, the Rote Berg was documented as an independent Kenzingen vineyard site. In the historical production of the Kenzingen-Hecklingen-Bombach winegrowers’ cooperative, Roter-Berg-Spätburgunder was listed as a site wine marketed separately.
