Rosenberg

Location and Classification

The Sommeracher Rosenberg is a legally registered single vineyard in the Franconian region of the Volkacher Mainschleife. It is located on the wine island north of Sommerach and is assigned to the municipalities of Sommerach and Volkach-Hallburg in the Kitzingen district. In the Franconian vineyards directory, the site is assigned to the Großlage of Kirchberg; selected Sommerach parcels belong to the Großlage Engelsberg.

Terrain and Soils

The vineyards occupy parts of the Kreuzberg, which is around 287 metres high. Documented are eastern and south-western exposures with slope gradients of approximately 10 to 25 percent. The soils are described as Upper Muschelkalk with sand cover, as well as Lettenkeuper.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

On the Rosenberg plateau, Silvaner, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon grow. Wines designated as Sommeracher Rosenberg are also produced from Grauburgunder and Frühburgunder. A 2024 Grauburgunder is a dry Kabinett with 12 percent alcohol, 4.3 grams of residual sugar and 5.8 grams of total acidity. A 2018 Frühburgunder has been developed as a dry Spätlese and matured for twelve months in a large wooden cask.

Microclimate and Irrigation

For Rosenberg and Katzenkopf, microclimates are described that are shaped by altitude and the proximity to the Main. In the wine-growing region of Sommerach, drip irrigation is used; for the Rosenberg area, its expansion and modernisation are planned.
