Location and classification
Rosenberg is a single vineyard within the collective vineyard of Petersberg in the Nierstein area of Rheinhessen. The site is located within the municipal area of Biebelnheim.
Soil and aspect
The documented soil consists of deep, calcareous marl, or Pelosol. The clay-rich soil was formed from deposits of the Tertiary sea, contains swelling clay and shows limited water permeability. A documented Rosenberg Riesling originates from a south-facing slope.
Name and history
The wine-growing site has already been documented in 1591 under the name “am Rosenberg”. The name is associated with rose bushes that were previously planted at the ends of the vine rows as an early warning sign for mildew.
Grape varieties and wines
For Rosenberg, Riesling and Spätburgunder are documented. Produced and marketed under the single-vineyard designation are a dry Riesling and a Spätburgunder single-vineyard wine. In addition, from grapes from the Biebelnheim Rosenberg and Pilgerstein vineyards, sparkling wine made traditionally by bottle fermentation is also produced.
