Rosenberg

Location and classification

The Rosenberg in Bad Kreuznach is, according to local producers, managed in viticulture as the Kreuznacher Rosenberg in the winegrowing region Nahe. The current location, as stated, comprises about 405 hectares of the Bosenheimer Weinberg and includes the former sites Kreuznacher Höllenbrand, Kreuznacher Galgenberg and Kreuznacher Tilgesbrunnen.

Climate and topography

The site lies at around 120 to 180 metres above sea level. In addition to relatively flat areas, there are slopes facing south to south-west, which drop towards Bad Kreuznach at an inclination of roughly 30 percent. The climate is described as being influenced by the Mediterranean; the average annual rainfall is 568 millimetres, and the average temperature is 9.5 °C.

Soils

Heat-storing terrace gravel, stony-sandy loam with water-retaining capacity and clay marl have been documented. In addition, a high proportion of former Nahe river floodplain gravel and a permeable soil structure are described.

Grape varieties and wine style

The Kreuznacher Rosenberg is suitable for both white and red grape varieties. Riesling is one of the defining varieties; in addition, Sauvignon Blanc, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, Scheurebe and Kanzler are documented. Rieslings from this site are described as light, mineral, fresh, fruity and comparatively slender. Dry white wines are evidenced, as well as fine-bred or sweet Prädikat wines, and dry red wines. A Sauvignon Blanc from the 2019 vintage was fermented and matured in a stainless steel tank.
