Location and classification
Römerberg is a wine-growing site designation in Rheinhessen and extends across the municipalities of Badenheim and Wöllstein. The Badenheim portion is assigned to the wine-growing region component of Bingen and the Grand Cru (Großlage) St. Rochuskapelle. There, Römerberg is classified as a single vineyard (Einzellage).
Soils
In the Badenheim Römerberg, calcareous clay deposits from a tertiary sea shape the terroir through marl and pelo-sols (Pelosol) soils. The deep soils are rich in lime, nutrient-rich and high in clay that can hold water. Their water and air permeability is limited; locally, a high proportion of loess loam is also described.
Wine style and grape varieties
The marl and pelo-sols soils are associated with full-bodied, dense and substantial wines with moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe fruit. For the Badenheim Römerberg, mineral notes and a wide range of fruit aromas are also documented. The grape varieties mentioned are Optima and Riesling.
Name
The designation Römerberg is traced back to archaeological finds from Roman times in the area.
