Römerberg

Location and classification

Römerberg is a legally registered single vineyard in the Essenheimer cadastral district. It belongs to the Nierstein area in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen; the corresponding Großlage is Domherr. The Vineyard Register 2024 lists an area of 41.4 hectares.

Topography and soils

The site lies on an exposed plateau above the Selz valley. The plots documented by Braunewell are at an elevation of 220 to 240 metres and are oriented to the south. Strong winds shape the plateau. The soil is described as loess-pararendzina: calcareous wind-blown sediment deposited during the Ice Ages, with deep, fertile, calcareous soil and good water retention. Braunewell describes the soils of his Römerberg plots as limestone soils.

Wine style and use

Römerberg wines are associated with aromas of yellow fruits, apple, peach, pear and citrus. They show a slim to medium-strong structure, mild acidity and a fresh, early-drinkable style. For his sparkling wine production, Braunewell plants Chardonnay at Römerberg. According to the winery, the exposed site there supports fresh, acidity-emphasising base wines for sparkling wines with a mineral character; this includes the sparkling wine referred to as RÖMERBERG Chardonnay Prestige brut nature.

Origin of the name

The name Römerberg is traced back to archaeological finds from Roman times in the surrounding area.
