Location and classification
The Rheinpforte winegrowing site, officially Selzener Rheinpforte, is located in the [Selzener](/en/cities/selzen) cadastral district in [Rheinhessen](/en/regions/rheinhessen). It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the larger site (Großlage) Gutes Domtal.
Name and vineyard area
The name Rheinpforte goes back to a gate of the former village fortifications in Selzen, from which a path led in the direction of the Rhine. In the 2024 wine sites directory, a planted vineyard area of 66.2 hectares is listed.
Soil and terroir
The documented soil type is marl/pelosol from calcareous, clay-rich deposits of the Tertiary sea. The deep soil is rich in lime and nutrients, contains clay that can swell and shows limited permeability as well as aeration. Its warming capacity is moderate, and rooting is difficult.
Wine style and grape varieties
The soil conditions are associated with full-bodied, dense and rich wines with moderate acidity, a creamy texture and ripe fruit; a pronounced minerality is less to the fore. Documented wines from Selzen Rheinpforte are Sauvignon Blanc and Grauburgunder. Sauvignon Blanc is described as a dry, fresh summer wine with notes of gooseberry, paprika and mineral tones, while Grauburgunder is described as creamy and multifaceted, with an integrated tannin structure.
