Rheinberg

Location and Geography

Rheinberg is a single vineyard site in Münster-Sarmsheim in the winegrowing region Nahe. The vineyard does not lie directly on the Rhine; from its height, the river can be seen from a distance of less than two kilometres. The south-easterly-facing site lies at around 120 to 180 metres above sea level and has slope gradients of approximately 20 to 60 percent. It is one of the steepest sections of vineyard slopes in the local Münster-Sarmsheim site area.

Climate and Soils

A wooded stand protects Rheinberg from cold air currents coming from the western Hunsrück. The soil is given as quartzite; in addition, quartzite and phyllite slate are mentioned. The individual slope sections are shaped differently geologically and also include loam, brown earth, black slate, loess, and red slate.

Area and Cultivation

The state vineyard directory for the 2024 vintage lists Rheinberg with an area of 6.4 hectares. Kruger-Rumpf cultivates, according to its own information, five hectares of the site, which covers around 7.5 hectares. In 2013, two hectares of vineyard terraces were created there, on which sheep usually graze. The VDP lists Münster-Sarmsheimer Rheinberg as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with a classified area of 8.45 hectares.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

Riesling is the grape variety classified in the VDP site profile. Historical evidence also mentions Silvaner and Kerner, although Riesling makes up the larger share of the documented examples. Rieslings are evidenced as Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Eiswein, as well as dry and semi-dry wines. A historical winegrowing map of the Nahe from 1901 shows the vineyard area with Rheinberg.
