Location
Rheinaue is a legally designated vineyard site in the cadastre area of Dottendorf in the city of Bonn. It lies in the wine-growing region Mittelrhein, in the Siebengebirge area, and is assigned to the Bonner Rheinaue near the Post Tower.
Vineyard
The small site, located about 66 metres above sea level, is situated in the park landscape of the Rheinaue and not on a classic slope. The legally designated area is 0.1 hectares; the school vineyard is described as covering about 800 square metres.
History and cultivation
The state of Rhineland-Palatinate established the vineyard as a demonstration site for the Federal Garden Show 1979 in Bonn. After the event, it was transferred to the Beethoven-Gymnasium Bonn. Since 1983, teachers and students have tended the vines; the grapes are harvested by hand at an annual joint harvest. The first vintage, described as “Vinea Domini”, was tasted in April 1984.
Processing and classification
A professional winemaker processes the harvested grapes. The resulting wine is sold for charitable purposes. Rheinaue is listed as a single vineyard within the approved larger site of Königswinterer Petersberg; wines from the listed sites may be described as Rheinburgen-Landwein.
