Location and classification
Rappental corresponds to the single vineyard Dorndorfer Rappental in the area of Schloss Neuenburg and within the Großlage Freyburger Schweigenberg. It belongs to the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut and is linked to Laucha an der Unstrut.
Topography and climate
The vineyard stretches along the Unstrut below the Laucha Gleitstandort. The river forms one boundary, while a ridge provides shelter on the other side. Many hours of sunshine, the sheltered location and the influence of the river shape the conditions. South-facing slopes reach an incline of up to 55 degrees.
Soils and grape varieties
The subsoil consists of shell limestone with clay deposits and gypsum Keuper layers. Deep, base-rich soils on shell limestone are described as advantageous for water availability in increasingly dry years. The official register lists an area of 60.1254 hectares; a regional growers’ association cites 56.7 hectares, including 17 hectares of steep slopes. The site is associated with Riesling, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder. In individual parcels, Grauburgunder, Portugieser, Bacchus and Kerner are also grown.
Wines and winemaking
Regionally, the wines of Rappental are associated with balanced minerality. Documented varieties include dry Riesling, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder Spätlese and Spätburgunder. In one producer’s range, white wines ripen in general in stainless steel; Weißburgunder and red wines can also be matured in large wooden casks. A Portugieser from the site ripens for six months in used barrique casks.
