Location and Classification
Rappental is officially registered as a single vineyard, Dorndorfer Rappental, in the area of Schloss Neuenburg, within the larger appellation Freyburger Schweigenberg. The wine-growing site extends in the Unstrut valley from the area to the north-east of Dorndorf towards the Gleina hills; Gleina is part of its cadastral areas.
Site
The south-facing exposure is shaped by the Unstrut valley. It includes very steep slopes, where documented plots reach inclinations of up to 55 degrees. As the geological basis, weathered Muschelkalk, fibrous gypsum formations and loamy soils are cited.
Area and Vines
As of 31 December 2024, the official wine-growing sites register recorded 60.1254 hectares of planted vineyard area. Documented varieties include, among others, Bacchus, Kerner, Spätburgunder, Riesling, Portugieser, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Traminer and Zweigelt.
Wines and Development
The site produces dry German quality wines, including Riesling, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder and Portugieser. The wines are associated with mineral-styled white wines as well as red wines from Portugieser and other red grape varieties; individual Portugieser wines are described as being low in acid and tannins. Since 1986, a vineyard area linked to the site at Dorndorf has been replanted or reclaimed by a family-run winery from Gleina. For selected wines, ageing in wooden vessels is also documented.
