Rabenkopf

Location and classification

Rabenkopf is a registered single vineyard in the Bingen district of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen, within the large site Kaiserpfalz. It lies in the cadastral area of Nieder-Ingelheim of Ingelheim am Rhein. The vineyard area register for 2024 records 10.8 hectares of planted area.

Topography and soils

The wine-growing site is situated on a hillside and stretches from about 130 to 220 metres above sea level. Its exposure is to the northwest. One of the soil units is a calcareous rendzina formed from tertiary marine deposits with calcareous reef formations. The shallow to medium-deep, very calcareous and stony sand-loam soil is well drained and warms up well, but has limited available water storage and reduced rooting depth.

The second soil unit is a sand-rigosol formed from calcareous dust and sand deposited during the Ice Ages. It is deep and calcareous, has a medium water storage capacity as well as very good aeration and rootability. Its warming capacity is described as medium to good.

Wine style

The calcareous rendzina is associated with expressive, aromatic wines that show notes of citrus fruits, apple and gooseberry, and that can develop into mango and passion fruit. Balanced acidity, as well as mineral and chalky characteristics, are also part of the description. The sand-rigosol is more often associated with red than with white wines, which show intense fruit, a dense structure and a soft acidity, and benefit from ripeness.

Name and register

The name Rabenkopf refers to the site on a hillside and its description as a preferred nesting place for ravens. In the official vineyard area register 2024, the single vineyard is listed under number 710318 for Ingelheim am Rhein, Nieder-Ingelheim.
