Single-vineyard site and classification
The Pfaffenhalde is a single-vineyard site in the municipality of Alzey in the Wonnegau, a sub-region of Rheinhessen. Its larger growing area is Sybillenstein.
Location and soils
The vineyards are located at an altitude of 180 to 240 metres and face east, south and south-west. Documented are loess over para-rendzina as well as loess over chernozem. The para-rendzina soils are calcareous, deep-rooting and made up of light-coloured loam with clayey silt; they have a high capacity for storing water available to plants. The chernozem soils are rich in humus and provide very good conditions for rooting.
Wine style
Loess over para-rendzina produces early-to-drink, fruit-forward wines with mild acidity and medium structure. Loess over chernozem is associated with early-to-drink, fruit-forward wines with rounded acidity and a medium body.
