The subsoil consists of deep blue slate weathering soil and is characterised by a high slate content.
Vines and cultivation
Riesling is documented in the site. One parcel comprises vines with an age of more than 70 years and is traditionally trained on individual posts. The work in the vineyard is carried out by hand; in addition, intentionally reduced yields are stated.
Wine styles and history
Documented Rieslings from Petersborn-Kabertchen are available in dry, fine-hopped and sparkling styles. Descriptions associate them with fine fruit, comparatively low acidity, body and a mineral character shaped by slate. A documented Riesling sparkling wine (Sekt) from the 2006 vintage was selected and harvested by hand, cold-fermented and produced as sparkling wine in separate cellar rooms.
The history of Zell records the year 1863 as the first documented use of the site name Zeller Schwarze Katz. Petersborn-Kabertchen is referred to by a local producer as part of the historic steep-slope vineyards of the Zeller Schwarze Katz.
