Paulinshofberger

Location and Topography

The Paulinshofberg is a vineyard site in Kesten in the Mosel wine-growing region and borders directly on the Brauneberger Juffer. The very steep hillside, which is oriented south-southeast, features open rock outcrops. The classified area lies at an elevation of 119 to 208 metres and covers 7.27 hectares.

Soils and Microclimate

The soils consist of blue slate and weathered clay slate. The slate weathering soil is described as deep, slightly loamy and finely layered, and shows blue-anthracite-coloured tones to silvery grey. The south-southeast orientation supports warming through solar radiation; the deep soil stores daytime warmth.

Grape Variety and Wine Style

The Paulinshofberg is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, with Riesling as the classified grape variety. Documented wines from the site are Rieslings. The producer describes them as precise and mineral-rich with finely spiced acidity; they are bottled as dry Grosses Gewächs and off-dry wines.

Cultivation and History

The slate vineyards are farmed in a natural way and by hand; the grapes are selected and harvested by hand. They are processed gently and matured naturally, supplemented by a careful use of traditional and modern cellar techniques. In the past, the site was previously the sole property of the Paulinshof. In the 1804 vineyard classification, wines from Kesten were, according to the producer, ranked third out of a ten-level order.
