Paulinsberg

Location and extent

Paulinsberg is a vineyard site in Kesten in the German wine-growing region Mosel. The site covers about 40 hectares and extends from gentle slopes to extremely steep vineyard sections. Above Kesten, the terrain slopes steeply down along the Mosel and is partly rocky; the exposure is south-easterly.

Soils and cultivation

The vineyards are characterised by finely weathered slate soils. For parts of the site, strongly weathered grey slate and slate rich in clay are described. Plots in Paulinsberg are cultivated by a single grower by hand and require work on steep slopes.

Grape variety and wines

Riesling is grown in Paulinsberg; a producer from Kesten cultivates exclusively this grape variety in his plots there. Riesling Kabinett and Riesling Spätlese are documented. The wines are described as fruity and floral. A Paulinsberg Riesling Spätlese from the 2019 vintage has 59.7 grams of residual sugar per litre and 10 per cent alcohol.

Name

The name Paulinsberg goes back to the previously extensive vineyard holdings of St. Paulin in Trier.
