Paradies

Location and Classification

Paradies is an officially classified single vineyard in Kröv on the Mosel. The wine-growing site belongs to the Großlage Nacktarsch and carries the official wine-growing site code 410605. It extends from Viehbach to the cadastral boundary with Kinheim; the 2024 vineyard directory lists 80.0 hectares of planted vineyard area.

Relief, Aspect and Soils

The extensive Paradies comprises flat areas and steep slopes at around 110 to 145 metres above sea level. The aspect varies from west, east and south depending on the section. In the flat areas there are heavy, loamy soils as well as alluvial and gravel soils, while the slopes are characterised by Devon slate, weathered slate soils and very light slate soils. The steep slope Hähl features blue Devon slate and Rotliegend slate with many coarse rock components.

Grape Varieties and Wine Style

In Paradies, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, or Rivaner and Dornfelder are grown. In addition, Pinot blanc vines have been planted. Müller-Thurgau grows in the flat, Mosel-close areas, while Riesling grows on the slopes. The Rieslings are described as light, fruity and gently piquant, the Müller-Thurgau wines as juicy and elegant. From the slate-influenced area of Hähl come fine, mineral wines; mature, dry wines may show integrated acidity, body and subtle cassis notes.

Special Conditions

An open area of Kröv’s Paradies is considered to be particularly prone to late frost. In a west-facing section, the reflection of the Mosel surface intensifies the afternoon and evening sun. The current, contiguous area was created during the land consolidation of numerous single vineyards in connection with the German wine law of 1971.
