Location and Classification
Osterberg is a legally registered single vineyard site in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen, in the area of Nierstein and within the grand cru Gutes Domtal. The vineyard site is mapped in the cadastral districts of Selzen and Mommenheim, and bears the vineyard site number 720413. The 2024 vineyard register lists 57.7 hectares in Selzen and 23.6 hectares in Mommenheim.
Topography and Soils
Osterberg lies north of Selzen at around 130 to 230 metres above sea level and is oriented to the south-west. The site is classified as Mergel-Pararendzina with calcareous loams and sands from deposits of the Tertiary sea. Deep, calcareous clay soils with a high proportion of source clay are rich in nutrients and strongly calcareous; at the same time, water permeability, ventilation and rooting depth are limited. The heavy clay-marl soils require deep rooting so that the vines can reach mineral elements and water.
Grape Varieties and Wine Style
Riesling is demonstrably grown successfully at Osterberg. The wines of the site are associated with a dense, full-bodied and expressive character, balanced acidity and fruit-forward intensity. For white wines, mango, honeydew melon and apricot are described, while for red wines dark fruit and smoky spice.
Historical Designation
The name of the vineyard site is documented in the 12th century as “im Osterberg” and in 1436 as “in dem Osterberg”. It derives from the Middle High German term for a position located to the east.
