Olgaberg

Location and Geology

The Olgaberg is located in Singen (Hohentwiel) in Baden-Württemberg on the Hohentwiel massif. The vineyards extend along the southern slopes and rise to about 530 metres. The vines take root directly in volcanic material from the Hohentwiel, including phonolite and tuff.

Ecology and Cultivation

The State Winery Meersburg has been cultivating the Olgaberg ecologically since the beginning of the year 2000. Chemical plant protection agents are not used. Terraces adapted to ecological needs create habitat for endangered animal and plant species. The Olgaberg forms part of the Hohentwiel nature reserve; its vineyard flora and fauna are considered significant components of the protection.

Grape Varieties and Wines

For the Olgaberg, wines made from Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Weißburgunder, Spätburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc and Souvignier Gris are documented. The dry Olgaberg Riesling is a quality wine with fine acidity, a mineral character and grapefruit and apricot aromas. The dry Spätburgunder is described as structured and elegant, and develops more slowly than the other wines. The 2022 vintage was macerated in mash-fermentation from hand-selected grapes and then aged dry in large wooden barrels. The 2024 vintage of the Riesling carries the organic control number DE-ÖKO-022.

Name and History

The name Olgaberg is derived from Olga Nikolajewna Romanowa, who became Queen Olga of Württemberg as Grand Duchess of Russia. The vineyards on the Hohentwiel previously supplied the garrison of the fortress located on the summit with wine.
