Oberrot

Location and Aspect

Oberrot is a named vineyard site in Lengfurt within the wine-growing region Franconia. The site lies above the Main valley on an exposed, south-facing position and is protected by the Main valley. Oberrot is one of the smaller named vineyard sites in Franconia.

Geological Subsoil

The geological subsoil consists of red quartzite in an approximately five-metre-thick sandstone formation. Deeply weathered red Rot material forms deep soils with a high capacity for water retention; below this is Lower Muschelkalk.

History and Viticulture

The name Oberrot is documented in the land register of the Triefenstein monastery from 1421 as “Öbern Rode”, together with named partial plots. After a period without vines, the site was replanted with vines in 2002. Terraces and dry-stone walls have been preserved at the site; in the lower area they are made from sandstone elements, and in the upper area from Muschelkalk.

Varieties and Wines

With the Lengfurt Oberrot are associated Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Scheurebe, Spätburgunder, Frühburgunder, Saint Laurent, Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Cubin. Oberrot is classified as VDP.First Site. Documented are dry red wines, including a dry Spätburgunder and the dry red wine Via Publica. A documented Oberrot Spätburgunder is fermented with the skins and aged in wooden barrels.
