Location and classification
The Nüsseberg is near Freyburg in the Saale-Unstrut area. In the official wine-growing sites directory for 2024, it is listed as the single-vineyard Weischützer Nüssenberg within the area of Schloß Neuenburg and the Großlage Freyburger Schweigenberg. The registered vineyard area covers 56.6778 hectares and extends across the cadastral districts of Weischütz, Müncheroda and Zscheiplitz.
Relief and soil
The wine-growing site is located on a prominent spur that juts into the Unstruttal. Documented vineyard plots are on its south-facing slope. For the Nüssenberg, a landscape form shaped by terraced slopes is characteristic. The area belongs to the continental biogeographical region and has dry, exposed areas with shallow soils. Geologically, Muschelkalk with a distinctive Lower Muschelkalk and Wellenkalk shapes the site; for a documented parcel, a stony, calcareous weathering soil is given.
Grape varieties and wines
At Weischützer Nüssenberg, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Bacchus, Kerner, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Kernling, Traminer, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Frühburgunder (Early Pinot Noir) are documented. Wines linked to the site include dry Bacchus, dry Kernling, dry Riesling, semi-dry Spätburgunder rosé, dry Frühburgunder aged in barrique and dry Weißburgunder Spätlese.
Cultivation
The Bernard Pawis winery cultivates 0.5 hectares of its own vines at Weischützer Nüssenberg. In spring 2008, Klaus Lüttmer planted a previously fallow parcel there with 0.35 hectares of Frühburgunder. For this cultivation, natural cover crops, the avoidance of herbicides and pesticides, gentle vine pruning, hand work in the leaf wall and fruit zone, as well as hand-harvesting at 25 hectolitres of yield per hectare are documented. A Frühburgunder was fermented spontaneously, processed partly with whole berries, gently pressed and aged for twelve months in used barriques; bottling was carried out unfiltered.
