Location and classification
The Nonnenstück is a single vineyard site to the north-east of Deidesheim in the Pfalz. It belongs to the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße growing area and forms part of the Deidesheimer Hofstück grand cru.
Topography and soils
The vineyard lies at around 115 metres above sea level and is completely flat. The documented soils include sand, sandy loam and loam; in lower-lying areas, water may have an influence. The Haardt protects the site on its lee side from precipitation.
Grape varieties and wine styles
From the Nonnenstück, Riesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot are documented. The wines are offered as dry Rieslings, dry Weissburgunder and Grauburgunder, dry Sauvignon Blanc and dry Merlot. A dry Grauburgunder Kabinett is also historically documented. A description of the plots cultivated there mentions sandy soils that warm up easily and favour early ripening, rounded acidity and a full bouquet.
History of the name
The name was first documented in 1673 as “im Nonnenstück” and refers to an earlier connection to a nunnery.
