Location and classification
Nikolausberg is a registered vineyard site in the wine-growing region of Burg Cochem and is locally assigned to the Cond district of Cochem. It belongs to the Großlage Cochemer Rosenhang and is also referred to by local producers as Conder Nikolausberg or Cochemer Nikolausberg.
Slope and soils
The site consists of a steep slope facing south, which flattens out in parts towards the Mosel. The slate weathering soil contains fine earth. The slate stores and releases heat; for the summer, local temperatures of up to around 50 °C are described.
Vines and wines
In Nikolausberg there are old plantings with own-rooted vines. For Conder Nikolausberg, Riesling and Blauer Spätburgunder are documented. Under the name Cochemer Nikolausberg, wines made from Riesling, Weißburgunder, Roter Elbling and Regent are also produced.
Vinification and wine law
The documented cuvée wines from specific sites include dry Riesling Spätlesen, delicately off-dry Rieslings and sweet Riesling Auslesen, as well as wines from red and white grape varieties. The term Steillage is permitted under the German Wine Ordinance exclusively for wines whose grapes come entirely from vineyard areas with a slope of at least 30 percent.
