Mönchspfad

Location and historic route

The Monks’ Path, also known as the Geisenheimer Monks’ Path, is located in Geisenheim in the wine-growing region Rheingau. The vineyard site extends along the historic Monks’ Path from Johannisberg towards Eibingen through the Geisenheim municipal area.

The path is documented for the years 1356 and 1444 and was used by members of the monasteries of Johannisberg and Eibingen.

Soils and vines

The geological diversity of the site is shaped by deep loess and loess-clay soils. Their depth allows the vines to develop a deep root system, which is particularly important in dry years.

The designated cultivated grape variety is Riesling.

Classification and wine style

In the official Hessian directory of vineyard sites, the Monks’ Path is assigned to the large site Burgweg in the Johannisberg area and allocated to the municipality of Geisenheim. The wines from this site are associated with pronounced fruit acidity.
