Mönchsberg

Location

The Mönchsberg is a vineyard site in Markelsheim in the Tauber Valley, a town of Bad Mergentheim. The vineyard site lies on a slope above Markelsheim; a documented route leads through the Mönchsberg at about half the slope’s height.

Soil and cultivation

The vineyards in the Markelsheim cultivation area stand on shell limestone. The Mönchsberg is documented as currently cultivated and newly organised planting area in the biotope connectivity plan of the town of Bad Mergentheim.

Grape varieties and wines

For the Markelsheim Mönchsberg, wines made from Bacchus, Tauberschwarz, Spätburgunder, Acolon and Regent are documented. Among these are dry wines, a dry Bacchus, and a dry white-prunings harvested Tauberschwarz. A Tauberschwarz was aged in wooden casks.

Historical name

The field name Mönchsberg is recorded on a cadastral map of the Markelsheim district from 1833. Documented Mönchsberg wines were offered as quality wine; an Acolon was listed as a Prädikatswein Spätlese.
