Mönchberg

Location and Classification

The Volxheim Mönchberg is a single-vineyard site in the Volxheim cadastral district. It belongs to the sub-region of Bingen and to the larger site of Rheingrafenstein in Rheinhessen. The vineyard register lists the site with 37.5 hectares of planted vineyard area.

Soil

The soil consists of marl and pelosol, formed from calcareous, clayey deposits of the Tertiary sea. The deep, lime-rich clay has a high proportion of clay capable of swelling and is rich in nutrients. Water and air permeability, as well as root penetration, are limited.

Wine Style

The site’s soil produces full-bodied, dense and rich wines with moderate acidity and a creamy texture. Typical are ripe aromas of tropical fruit and stone fruit with comparatively low minerality.

History and Grape Varieties

The site was documented in 1468 under the name uff den monichsberg and was held by the Augustinian monastery in Pfaffen-Schwabenheim. In a vineyard belonging to Weingut Kitzer, Portugieser, Dornfelder and Spätburgunder grow. The Portugieser vines planted there in 1958 are cultivated entirely by hand; their grapes are selected for the Portugieser Antik.
