Location and Classification
Mönchberg is a vineyard site in Mayschoß in the Ahr wine-growing region. The VDP classifies the site as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.
Topography and Soils
The site comprises steep terraces facing south, supported by slate dry-stone walls. The average slope gradient is 45 per cent. For the classified site, 200 to 220 metres above sea level are given; the further Mayschoßer Mönchberg extends from 140 to 260 metres and has slope gradients of 10 to 75 per cent.
To the north, woodland borders the vineyard and shields it from cold winds. The soils consist of greywacke with a small proportion of clay, as well as stony to slightly clayey greywacke and weathered slate soils.
Grape Varieties and Wine
For Mönchberg, Spätburgunder, Frühburgunder and Riesling are documented. In the further Mayschoßer Mönchberg, Regent is also grown. The Mayschoß-Altenahr winegrowing cooperative documents a dry Mönchberg Spätburgunder as a red wine. The bottling of the 2020 vintage has 0.6 grams of residual sugar and 5.6 grams of acidity per litre.
Yield
For the Mönchberg vineyards, very low yields are stated due to the age of the vines and the barren slate soils, at a maximum of 3,500 litres per hectare.
